Open Science Day V: Promoting Open Science

On 5 November 2024, the University of Belgrade organized the fifth Open Science Day, an event dedicated to promoting the principles of open science and current initiatives in this field. The aim of the conference was to familiarize researchers from Serbia with the requirements and opportunities that open science offers, especially in the context of projects funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia and the European Commission. The event brought together numerous experts and researchers who exchanged experiences and ideas on improving open science in Serbia. The conference provided a platform for presenting various projects, networks and initiatives that contribute to the development of open science.

The conference was opened by Prof. Dr. Miroslav Trajanović, State Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, together with Prof. Dr. Vladimir Cvetković, Vice-Rector for Science at the University of Belgrade. The conference presented topics such as the draft of the new Open Science Platform, projects, networks and initiatives, and the infrastructure for open science in Serbia. One of the prominent participants was Dr. Matija Zlatar from the Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy (ICTM). As the coordinator of the Team for Open Science in Serbia, Dr. Zlatar gave a presentation on the topic "Open Science Platform 2024 - introduction and development of skills and competencies for open science." As the coordinator of SAIGE activities at ICTM, he also gave a presentation on "Open Science within the SAIGE project: an example of a workshop on Research Data Management and Open Access." Dr. Zlatar also presented "Establishing Serbian Reproducibility Newtork" as the leader of the team that received the TIER2 award for this initiative and emphasized the importance of fostering a cultural change in the Serbian research community, prioritizing reproducibility, open science, and scientific integrity. At this event, Milica Ninković, from the Institute for Medical Research, presented "FAIR IMPACT support action: Recommendations for trustworthy and FAIR-enabling data repositories," a project coordinated by ICTM and involving the Institute for Nuclear Sciences "Vinča", the Institute for Medical Research, and the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković". The collaboration of these four institutes through this project emphasizes their commitment to Open Science and the principles of transparency, interoperability, and trustworthiness in scientific work.
